Meet Jake: Friend First, Teacher Second
Jake leads our Homeschool Enrichment Program
One afternoon a week for homeschooled children ages six to twelve.
Tuesdays, 2:00 to 4:00pm, beginning October 6th.
Jake brings a rare combination to Hidden Meadow: the precision of evidence-based behavioral science and the wisdom of primitive living skills. With 16 years of experience working with children and certification as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, he understands how learning happens at a neurological level. But he also knows that the best teacher is nature itself.
Since 2018, Jake has worked primarily with students on the spectrum, specializing in teaching early to intermediate language skills and supporting children through challenging behaviors. His training in trauma-informed care and assent-based treatment means he prioritizes emotional safety and student choice in every interaction.
But Jake’s expertise extends far beyond the clinical. He spent years training at Earthwalk Northwest’s Primitive Skills School, interning in their Primitive Skills Apprenticeship program, and studying ethnobotany. He attended The Tracker School on the East Coast, completed a month-long National Outdoor Leadership School course in backpacking and rock climbing, and was certified as a Wilderness First Responder.
What makes Jake unique is how he weaves these worlds together. He brings the intentional, data-driven approach of applied behavior analysis to outdoor education, ensuring that every interaction is purposeful and every child is learning in ways that connect with them personally.
His teaching philosophy is simple but profound: Follow the child’s lead. The only thing you need to do to capture a child’s interest is to let them teach you. Kids will show you what’s important to them, what motivates them, and what they’re excited to learn.
“I am their friend first and teacher second. I enjoy helping kids through lessons on plant ID and nature observation, sure, but also learning how to understand our emotions, thoughts, and feelings. Without that, learning the other stuff can be an uphill struggle.”

Jake’s Teaching Philosophy
How he believes children learn and grow best
Student-Driven Learning
Good teaching is not a mistake, and neither is poor teaching. Jake believes that all kids deserve to be inspired and to learn in ways that connect with them.
Nature as the Ultimate Teacher
As a child, there is no better place to start than from the source. From understanding when our body is hungry, to what we can eat, to how we make a friend, nature can teach us all.
Emotions Come First
Safety and emotional wellbeing come first and foremost in his practice. Only when these conditions are met do students really learn to love learning.
Follow Their Lead
This approach builds relationships naturally and ensures that learning is always relevant, engaging, and meaningful to each child.

Why I Chose Outdoor Education
Jake’s love of wild spaces started early. He was lucky enough to spend a lot of time in nature as a child, with his family taking camping trips to remote areas of Idaho, California, and British Columbia.
Learning Freedom in Wild Spaces
“I learned that there is no greater source of freedom than in wild spaces,” Jake reflects. “I learned how to play with and work with nature rather than against it.”
Those childhood experiences planted seeds that would grow throughout his life. Even as he pursued degrees in behavioral science and built a career working with children with autism, he continued seeking out wilderness experiences: snowboarding, hiking, camping, backpacking, and studying primitive living skills.
The Gift of a Strong Relationship with Nature
Jake believes that in our fast-paced world today, it is critically important that young people start out first with a strong relationship with nature. This is a gift that can guide and inspire people for a lifetime.
“I equally find passion in education and nature,
so there is no better place for me to be than combining both at Hidden Meadow.”
What Frustrated Him About Traditional Classrooms
Working in traditional settings, Jake became increasingly frustrated by how sterile the sensory experience was. In nature, everything has a smell, feel, sound, and taste (do not blindly taste nature). In a classroom, we lose a lot of that.
“Many things are made from artificial materials, infused with smells, and textured to mimic nature. I would rather go to the source.”
What He Loves About Teaching Outdoors
Smell, feel, tastes, and sounds. Jake loves teaching little humans to be little humans in our shared natural world. He loves that outdoor education engages all the senses and connects children directly to the source of all learning.
Early childhood offers an incredible opportunity to soak up all of the wonders of the world. By focusing on developing young people’s understanding of language and the social world in nature, we can make enormous impacts on future learning outcomes.
A look into his relationship with Molly
One summer evening while gardening, Jake threw a slug at Molly. Her face said “really?” and she did not appear amused at all. Jake knew it was a risk, but he figured if one slug was bad, two slugs should turn it around. After a brief pause for disbelief that she had been struck by a second flying slug, they all dissolved into uncontrollable laughter. They still laugh about how the second slug saved the day.
Life Outside Hidden Meadow
When Jake isn’t at Hidden Meadow, you’ll find him deep in the wilderness. His favorite thing to do in nature is to spend several nights backpacking or simply sitting in the silence of the forest. He loves snowboarding, hiking, camping, and continuing to develop his bushcraft and primitive living skills.
He’s also passionate about homesteading and gardening, living the principles he teaches. And he proudly claims the title of “best singer in my car on most days.”
