About Our Outdoor Preschool
Understanding what makes forest school different from traditional preschool
What is forest school?
Forest school is an outdoor education approach where children learn through nature exploration, hands-on discovery, and child-led play. Our outdoor preschool in Olympia uses our 16-acre campus, including forest trails, creeks, gardens, and natural play areas, as our classroom.
Unlike traditional preschools that occasionally go outside, we spend the majority of our day outdoors in all weather conditions. Children learn through direct experience with the natural world while developing academic, social, and emotional skills.

What ages do you serve?
We serve children ages 2.5 to 6 years old in our preschool program. Children must be 2.5 years old by their start date and should be potty-trained or actively working on potty training.
Our mixed-age groups allow younger children to learn from older peers while older children develop leadership and mentoring skills.
We also offer a homeschool enrichment program for school-age children ages 6 to 12, meeting Tuesday afternoons.

How is forest school different from regular daycare?
Forest school is education, not just childcare. Key differences include:
• Small group sizes: Intentionally limited enrollment for individual attention
• Primarily outdoor: Not just recess. Learning happens outside
• Master’s-level leadership: Our lead educator has a Master’s degree in Early childhood education and over 15 years experience teaching children.
• Nature-based curriculum: Academic concepts taught through outdoor exploration
• Inclusive approach: We welcome neurodivergent children and adapt to individual needs

Do you have a religious affiliation?
No, Hidden Meadow School is not affiliated with any religious organization. We welcome families of all backgrounds, beliefs, and traditions.
Do you have programs for older children?
Yes. Our homeschool enrichment program serves homeschooled children ages 6 to 12 on Tuesday afternoons from 2:00 to 4:00pm, starting October 6th.

Curriculum & Kindergarten Readiness
How outdoor learning prepares children for academic success
How do you prepare children for kindergarten?
We combine nature-based learning with traditional early education foundations. Children are NOT just playing outside—they’re developing crucial kindergarten readiness skills:
• Pre-literacy: Letter recognition through nature journaling, storytelling, forest signs, and pattern observation
• Pre-math: Counting nature collections, measuring with sticks, pattern recognition in seasons, sorting by size/color/shape
• Science: Hands-on observation, hypothesis testing, life cycles, weather, ecosystems
• Social-emotional: Collaboration, conflict resolution, empathy, self-regulation
• Executive function: Problem-solving, planning, focus, following multi-step directions
• Fine motor: Nature art, tool use, building, climbing
This is the best of both worlds: outdoor exploration AND academic preparation.

Do you follow a specific curriculum?
We use an emergent, nature-based curriculum that follows children’s interests while ensuring kindergarten readiness. Our approach draws from:
• Forest School philosophy (child-led outdoor learning)
• Reggio Emilia approach (project-based, inquiry-driven)
• Washington State Early Learning Guidelines
• Developmentally appropriate practices
We teach the same concepts as traditional preschools (letters, numbers, shapes, colors, patterns) but through nature exploration rather than worksheets.

Will my child be behind when they start kindergarten?
Research shows the opposite is true. Children from forest schools often outperform traditionally-educated peers in:
• Problem-solving and critical thinking
Creativity and imagination
• Social skills and emotional regulation
• Physical health and coordination
• Attention span and focus
• Intrinsic motivation to learn
They enter kindergarten with strong academic foundations PLUS skills traditional programs don’t teach: resilience, risk assessment, environmental awareness, and genuine curiosity.

Do you teach letters and numbers?
Absolutely! We teach early-literacy and early-math skills daily.
Our founder and lead teacher has over 15 years of traditional teaching manipulatives such as alphabet blocks, pattern blocks, unifix cubes, puzzles, crayons, whiteboards, etc.

How do you assess children’s progress?
We use ongoing observational assessment rather than formal testing. Teachers document learning through:
• Daily observations and notes
• Photo documentation of work and play
• Individual learning portfolios
• Developmental milestone tracking
Families receive progress updates through daily photos, biannual conferences, and ongoing communication. You’ll see your child’s growth in real time.

Safety & Weather Concerns
How we keep children safe while learning outdoors
Is outdoor learning safe?
Safety is our top priority. Our safety measures include:
• Secure site: Fully fenced 16-acre property assessed for hazards
• Low ratios: Small group sizes with multiple adults
• First aid trained: All staff certified in pediatric first aid and CPR
• Risk assessment: We teach children to assess risks appropriately, not eliminate all risk
• Clear boundaries: Established safe zones and procedures
• Emergency plans: Protocols for weather, injuries, and other emergencies
Outdoor learning actually reduces injuries compared to traditional playgrounds because children develop better body awareness and risk assessment skills.

What if it’s raining or cold?
“There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.”
We go outside every day, rain or shine. Weather is part of the learning experience. Children discover:
• How rain sounds on different surfaces
• Where puddles form and why
• How animals behave in different weather
• What frost looks like on leaves
We provide guidance on weather-appropriate clothing (rain gear, warm layers, sun protection) and have sheltered areas for extreme conditions.

What gear does my child need?
We provide a detailed gear list upon enrollment. Essential items include:
• Rain gear: Waterproof jacket and pants (we recommend specific brands)
• Boots: Waterproof boots for muddy days
• Layers: Warm base layers, fleece, waterproof outer layers
• Extra clothes: Complete change of clothes kept at school
• Sun protection: Hat and sunscreen
Many families find quality used gear on Facebook Marketplace or at consignment stores. We help you source affordable options.

What about bugs?
Insects:
Most insects are harmless and part of nature. We teach respectful observation. For bees/wasps, we move activities if nests are discovered and teach children to stay calm.
If your child has severe allergies to insect stings, we require an Epipen on site and will create an individualized safety plan.

Do you cancel for weather?
We rarely cancel. We operate in rain, cold, and light snow. We only cancel for:
• Ice storms or extremely icy conditions
• Severe thunderstorms or lightning
• Air quality alerts (wildfire smoke)
• Extreme heat (95°F+)
• Extreme wind due to the property being surrounded by tall trees
• Following North Thurston Public Schools closures
Families are notified of closures via text.

What if my child gets hurt?
Minor injuries (scrapes, bumps) are treated with first aid on-site and you’re notified at pickup with a written incident report.
For significant injuries requiring medical attention, we:
• Call 911 if emergency care is needed
• Contact parents immediately
• Provide first aid while waiting for help
• Complete detailed incident documentation
All staff are trained in pediatric first aid and CPR. Minor injuries are rare because outdoor learning develops body awareness and coordination.

Please keep your child home if they have:
• Fever (must be fever-free for 24 hours without medication)
• Vomiting or diarrhea (24 hours symptom-free)
• Contagious illness (pink eye, flu, COVID, etc.)
• Severe cold symptoms that prevent participation
We notify all families if a contagious illness is present in the classroom.

Can I visit or observe?
Before enrollment: Absolutely! We require tours where you visit many of the areas where your child will play and learn
After enrollment: Parent visits can be disruptive to classroom dynamics, and routines, especially during adjustment periods. However, we:
• Welcome you to stay and play for a bit at drop off in the morning to help you and your child adjust
• Host family events (seasonal celebrations, work parties)
• Welcome communication about your child’s day
• Offer occasional observation opportunities with advance notice

How do you handle behavior challenges?
We use positive guidance and natural consequences rather than punishment:
• Redirection to appropriate activities
• Teaching conflict resolution skills
• Helping children name and regulate emotions
• Natural consequences (e.g., if you throw sand, we leave the sandbox)
• Individual support for big feelings
We partner with families when behaviors are persistent or concerning. For children with diagnosed behavioral challenges, we create individualized support plans.

Special Needs & Inclusion
Supporting neurodivergent children and individual learning needs
Do you accept children with special needs?
Yes, absolutely. Our lead educator has a Master’s degree in Early childhood education and a bachelors in Special education with 15 years experience teaching special education. Inclusion is core to our philosophy.
We welcome children with:
• Autism spectrum disorder
• ADHD
• Sensory processing differences
• Speech/language delays
• Developmental delays
• Anxiety or emotional regulation challenges
Before enrollment, we meet with every family to discuss their child’s individual needs. During this conversation, we’ll review your child’s strengths, challenges, and any accommodations they require. Together, we’ll determine if our outdoor, small-group environment can provide the support your child needs to be safe, successful, and happy. While we’re equipped to support many different learning needs, the nature of our forest school setting and our small staff means we need to carefully assess each situation. Your child’s safety and success are our top priorities, and we’ll always be transparent about whether we can meet their needs.

Why is forest school good for neurodivergent children?
Nature provides unique benefits for children with sensory, attention, or emotional regulation differences:
• Sensory input: Natural sensory experiences (textures, sounds, movement) are regulating
• Movement: Constant opportunities for gross motor activity support focus and regulation
• Flexibility: Less structure than traditional classrooms reduces stress
• Success: No “wrong” way to explore nature builds confidence
• Small groups: Less overwhelming than large classroom settings
• Acceptance: Differences are celebrated, not pathologized

Can you work with my child’s therapists?
Yes! We partner with outside providers including special education teachers, SLPs, PT, and OTs when families consent. This can include:
• Sharing observation notes and progress updates
• Implementing strategies from occupational therapy, speech therapy, etc.
• Coordinating goals across home, school, and therapy
We require signed release forms to communicate with outside providers.

What if my child has allergies or medical needs?
We can accommodate most food allergies and medical conditions, but cannot accommodate environmental allergies common in outdoor settings.
Food allergies: We accommodate food allergies with action plans and safe snacks. Our allergen policies are child-dependent based on current enrollment. We’re currently peanut-free due to one student’s allergy, but if no enrolled children have peanut allergies, peanuts are allowed.
Environmental allergies: We cannot accommodate allergies to outdoor elements like pollen, grass, trees, or plants. Children spend the majority of their day outside and must be able to participate comfortably in all weather and seasons.
Medications: We administer medications with proper authorization forms in original containers with clear dosing instructions.
Medical conditions: Asthma, diabetes, seizure disorders, etc. can be managed with individualized health plans and emergency protocols.
